In the Netherlands the word ‘polder’ refers to low-lying land reclaimed from the sea or river via dykes, and divided into fields for agriculture. Hella Jongerius’ Polder Sofa evokes this characteristic Dutch landscape with a horizontal emphasis, strong geometries and asymmetrical cushions and armrests. Jongerius developed the textiles exclusively for Vitra; in carefully coordinated hues and weaves they are a subtle interplay of colour and texture.

Jasper Morrison’s Soft Modular Sofa series is the designer’s interpretation of a modern classic, connecting informal homeliness with clarity of expression. Staying true to Morrison’s “super-normal aesthetic,” the Soft Modular Sofa privileges form over fussiness with a low-slung body, voluminous cushions and a black plinth.

Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec’s Vegetal chair aspires to look like natural vegetation while achieving stability, strength and comfort. The result of intense exploration into injection moulding technology, the irregular seat shell has flat, branch-like ribs that are asymmetrically intertwined. The Vegetal chair is suitable for indoors and outdoors, and available in six colours that emphasis the Bouroullecs’ desire to replicate structures found in nature.

The Bouroullec brothers’ studio is in Belleville, Paris, an artsy and eclectic neighbourhood filled with bistros, bars and restaurants. Using the classic French bistro chair as a visual reference, the Bouroullecs created the Belleville chair. It has a familiar shape with a slender and curving black frame and a shell that tapers from the wide seat into a narrow backrest. Its available in plastic, plywood veneer or with leather or fabric upholstery.

Tip Ton, designed by Edward Barber and Jay Osgerby, is a solid plastic chair with an upright and forward-tilt sitting position that straightens the pelvis and spine and improves circulation. The chair responds to the results of a 2010 Swiss study that found that a forward-leaning sitting position increases muscle activity in the abdominal and back areas, which boosts the supply of oxygen to the body.
