Backcountry Safety

Our Freeride Athletes Join Julian Carr With Their Top Safety Tips

Backcountry skiing might be the fastest-growing part of the ski industry. Even more recently as lift access has become more of a process, backcountry skiing's popularity is exploding. And, while backcountry skiing might be the trendiest form of skiing right now, it's powdery rewards come with the greatest risks.

In the ski movies we flock to ahead of each ski season or the clips we watch on YouTube and Instagram, the best skiers in the world are often featured floating seamlessly through untouched pillow lines and getting face shots with every turn. But for every clip filmed in the backcountry, pros heli skiing the far reaches of the Tordrillo Range in Alaska to your ski buddy's GoPro clip from Mount Washington, Berthoud Pass, or Mount Hood, avalanches are a risk no matter what.

That's why we are bringing in the best to give you some general guidance before going into the backcountry this season. Join Julian Carr and other Spyder Big Mountain athletes live at 5PM MST TODAY for a take on their experiences in the backcountry.

LIVE AT 5 - MOUNTAIN TIME

Your Host: Julian Carr

The King of Cliff Drops, Julian is far from a stranger to the backcountry. In fact, he's broken one record after another dropping some of the biggest cliffs the backcountry has to offer. Most notably, Carr swan dove off a 210-footer (approximately 19 stories), and skied away unharmed.

Owen

Essential Safety Gear with Owen Leeper

Jackson, WY native Owen Leeper has made a name for himself in the skiing community for being unafraid to squeeze through some of the tightest couloirs the Teton Range's backcountry has to offer at alarmingly high speeds. Leeper rivals Julian Carr in his willingness to drop some of the biggest cliffs around.

Weather and Preparation With Lorraine Huber

Like Lundin, Lorraine also has a Freeride World Tour championship to list among her big mountain accomplishments. Huber has since turned her focus to the coaching side of the FWT and putting a special emphasis on mental strength; a component of skiing that often goes overlooked.

Connery

Sound Decision Making With Connery Lundin

Connery Lundin is known for skiing burly lines impeccably. With accomplishments including a Freeride World Tour championship under his belt, Connery has years of experience assessing backcountry terrain around the globe.

Group Dynamics with Amie Engerbretson

One of the leading women's big mountain/backcountry skiers, Amie has been featured in numerous Warren Miller films. Also the host of the popular skiing podcast "Long Underwear", Engerbretson has first-hand perspective of how real avalanches can be.

Bobby

Filming With Bobby Brown

Widely regarded as one of the leaders of the sport of freeskiing, Bobby Brown initially made a name for himself throwing tricks in terrain parks that no one had ever seen. Brown, whose resume includes 3 XGames Gold Medals, has since begun to intertwine his park skiing prowess and big mountain interests in backcountry skiing segments. These can be seen most recently in Bobby's film "Tilted Perspective".
