Happy Ski Season to All Who Celebrate! It has become a ritual. First the leaves begin changing, our local coffee shop starts serving up pumpkin spice lattes, and it begins again. We're doing snow dances before bed and, sometimes, as a collective group in common spaces; offering our annual sacrifice of long days and warm weather to Ullr with high hopes that the reward will mean that this winter is the one. Some folks fear waking up to dark mornings, brushing snow off of their windshields, and needing a steaming cup of joe to warm up in the mornings, but skiers? We relish it. We belong to a peculiar tribe who will drive long distances, miss football games on Sundays, and call out sick from work because 11" of fresh snow overnight means that, well, today will be a pretty sick day on the slopes. Or, as the late, legendary Dr. Robb Gaffney said, "skiing never fails to deliver magic." The 2023-24 Ski Season has begun! We tip our hats to Ski Ward (MA) for beating out some of the usual suspects here in Colorado to claim being first to open in the US! Whether you get in 5 days this season at a local hill like Ski Ward, or 50 at a mecca like Dr. Gaffney's home stomping grounds of Palisades Tahoe, skiing never fails to deliver magic, no matter where or how. Cheers to another ski season, friends! Those snow dances are working.
