Skiing is on the calendar.
| A 2021 Pandemic special on what's happening on the slopes (Part 2) It's been a few weeks since we did a piece on resort opening timelines in Europe. All of us here at Spyder, and I'm sure you too, expected to be headed to the mountains over Christmas / New Year break. However, Covid-19 had other plans for us. Since then, most of the opening dates we've communicated with you in good faith are either outdated or, worse, wrong! But, we have made another attempt to contact our favorite ski resorts (and yours too) to get an update on the current situation. These are truly unprecedented times, with things seemingly changing by the minute - but we're all in this together. | | This Is What We Know - For Now. This is not a definitive guide and should not replace official government announcements and restrictions. Let's get the general housekeeping out of the way first. As you probably know, restrictions vary from country to country. It's best to check with local authorities before you travel, just to make sure you won't be confined to a hotel room to quarantine or sent back home upon arrival. Government websites or https://reopen.europa.eu/ are a pretty good starting point, providing you with essential updates and information on travel restrictions. | | Spain Spain registered a-to-be-expected surge of Covid cases over the holidays, which has authorities still on edge. The good news is that favorite resorts like Baqueira Beret, or the Sierra Nevada are open, and most lifts are running. The bad news; There are local restrictions that potentially prohibit traveling between regions. While airports remain open, there are definitely a few bureaucratic hoops like a negative PCR test, for example, you have to jump through to kick off your ski season in Spain. Check here for the latest updates and information. | | France While France isn't planning to impose another lockdown, at this stage, French authorities have signalled to postpone the re-opening of cafes, restaurants, and bars, which in turn makes the imminent opening of ski resorts and lifts highly unlikely. That being said, there is hope! We have intel that most French Alps' resorts plan to kick off their season on February 1st. However, the last laugh remains with local authorities, who are monitoring the situation. They also indicated to provide an updated timeline and contingency plan on January 20. Check for the latest updates on safety measures and travel restrictions here. | | Italy Italy's ski resorts remain shut - for now! Official reports suggested that Italy would have liked to kick off their delayed snow season this week but they have since pushed that date back to February 15th. It remains a stop-and-go kind of scenario, but we will keep you posted. Also, travel restrictions are real, so it's best to check here before you pack your gear and head off to the Dolomites. | | Switzerland Switzerland remains the epicenter of skiing this season, with most resorts open for business. Although Switzerland is currently going through a Covid revival (and not the good kind), authorities are eager to keep resorts open with tight safety measures and social distancing rules. Be aware that some countries - looking at you, Austria, Germany, and Italy might slap skiers with home confinement or quarantine upon return. Also, travel restrictions apply to various countries if you find yourself on the BAG's Risk list. | | Austria The lines remain blurred in Austria. While the country is going through its 3rd lockdown, ski resorts are open. But what does that mean for tourists? Unfortunately, for now, skiing in Austria is for locals only. The board of tourism has indicated that they are planning to welcome tourists from on January 24th, given travelers can provide a negative PCR test (we're getting mixed signals and conflicting reports regarding the official date). Travel restrictions from non-EU countries apply, and with the Brexit hangover still looming, this applies to all UK nationals too.
