| | | CHECKING IN WITH OUR ATHLETES AS 2021 COMES TO A CLOSE From groundbreaking filmmaking to podium finishes and Olympic Team nominations, overall, 2021 has been a big year for Spyder athletes. From the FIS Alpine World Cup circuit to freeskiing podiums on the Dew Tour, to debuting films that have given us a peek behind the scenes at the lives of professional skiers off the snow, the successes of our athletes have been wide-ranging. Like all things in life, the slews of success have not been without disappointing setbacks elsewhere. However, the perseverance and grit displayed by skiers who've suffered injuries while pushing the limits of possibility in their sports are evidence of the passion and heart with which Spyder athletes approach every day. Here are just a few of the highlights.
| | | | | FROM TOP-10 FINISHES... 2021 was a breakthrough year for some of our youngest Spyder athletes, as Alex Hall, Giulia Tanno, and River Radamus—all just 23 years-old—each made major splashes in the freeskiing and FIS Alpine racing worlds, respectively. | | | A Hall nabbed a 1st place in the Dew Tour Streetstyle, and a pair of 2nd place finishes in the Dew Tour Slopestyle and Visa Big Air event in Steamboat. All of this was capped by winning Male Skier of the Year at the annual Newschoolers Awards in Copper. | | | | | | | | | | | | | River, meanwhile, has been steadily rising in Giant Slalom finishes across the World Cup circuit. Most notably, River's garnered 6th place finishes in Alta Badia, Italy and Sölden, Sweden as well as another 10th place in Alta Badia. | | | Giulia, in her return from a broken arm at XGames last season that required surgery and rehab, posted a 4th place finish at Big Air Chur in her hometown in Switzerland, and turned in an impressive 5th place finish in the Dew Tour Slopestyle at Copper earlier this month. | | | TO CREATIVITY THROUGH FILM... | | | | | Longtime Spyder athlete, big mountain skier, and overall badass Amie Engerbretson worked with Sweetgrass productions to produce and direct her very own passion project, "Boots over Brim". Amie intertwines her love for Western Dancing with Big Mountain skiing for a movie unlike any other. | | | A Hall (there is a reason he was named Male Skier of the year) was nominated at the Newschoolers awards for film of the year for his urban skiing edit titled "Security Notice". Alex was also featured in the Faction Collective's feature-length film, "Roots" soaring high above the Dolomites, and took home an XGames Gold Medal for his XGames Realski edit. | | | Giulia Tanno, who was dominating Big Air competitions all over the world prior to shattering her arm in training at XGames, released her short series, "The Journey", which goes behind the scenes in her recovery from a gruesome injury to return in pursuit an appearance at the 2022 Winter Olympics. | | | Freeride World Tour veteran Lorraine Huber created an entire masterclass around the importance of mental strength in athletics, and skiing specifically. What's more is the six part series is available for free here! | | | OUR ATHLETES MADE HUGE LEAPS... | | | Keep a close eye on U.S. Mogul Skier Jaelin Kauf as we go into the Olympics in February! | | | Owen Leeper takes flight off an 85-footer (yes, you read that correctly) in the Grand Targhee, Wyoming sidecountry in the spring. | | | US Ski Team downhiller Jared Goldberg also takes flight during USST training camp this fall at Copper Mountain, Colorado at a considerably higher speed than Owen. | | | Connery Lundin soars above the Prince William Sound on set for Warren Miller Entertainment's "Winter Starts Now", which debuted this fall worldwide. | | | FOUGHT THROUGH ADVERSITY... | | | Bobby Brown, who continues to dominate the world of freeskiing agelessly, broke his back throwing a cork 9 training earlier this fall in Saas Fee, Switzerland. Fortunately, Bobby's already back in the gym rehabbing to return. | | | Despite the fact that racers don't typically end upside down too often compared to their freeskiing counterparts, it turns out going 80+mph downhill has its risks. Alice Merryweather is investing long-term in her health by taking the next year off to fully recover from an unfortunate leg injury earlier this fall. | | | After backing out of his planned comeback season last year following an Achilles tear, Spyder's longest tenured athlete, Steven Nyman is skiing strong once again in pursuit of yet another Winter Olympics and World Cup Finals appearance in the Super G and Downhill alpine disciplines. | | | AND HAD A WHOLE LOT OF FUN | | | Last, but certainly not least, we're thrilled to welcome Tim Durtschi to the Spyder family! The Alaska native, who calls the Tetons of Wyoming home these days, has been at the forefront of Big Mountain skiing for years.
