Get In Ski Shape

Looking for a workout for the record books? We caught up with Spyder athlete and U.S. Ski Team member Steve Nyman and got the low down on what he does to stay in top shape before ski season.

 

Step 1: Core.

Your core is your foundation and can't be overlooked when it comes to getting in shape for skiing.

3 rounds fast paced:
-Straight abs w barbell overhead. 15 times
-Side plank twist hip hike. 10 times
-Hanging opposite toe touches. 14 times
-'Spyder-Man' crawls. 10 forward, 10 back.
-Straight abs no roll (keep low back tight and upper chest straight). 15 times.
-Push up star fish. 10 times.

Step 2: Balance.

Balance can often be overlooked when it comes to training for the ski season. Balance is crucial for recovering from a potential crash and overall turn timing. One of the best balancing exercises involves simply getting on a slack line. Focus on looking at the end of the slackline while walking across. For Nyman's full workout, get on a slackline between each set.

Step 3: Lifting and strength training.

This is an obvious one but using your time wisely and working out correctly comes in clutch here.

3 Rounds:
Squats.
12 reps, 10 reps, 12 reps totaling 3 sets.

Pull-ups.
Max reps each set.
SL squats.
12 reps, 10 reps, 12 reps totaling 3 sets.
Dips. Max reps each set.
Overhead diagonal lunges with barbell. 24 steps
Skull crushers.
12 reps each set.
Ham Curl Kneeling. 12 reps each set.
