Famous for designs like the Pop Art style Marshmellow sofa, sculptural Coconut Chair and iconic Ball Clock, George Nelson (1907–1986) was also a respected design theorist with a talent for looking into the future. His human-centred, creative problem-solving design approach was ahead of its time, and likely why so many of his designs endure today.

George Nelson is credited as being one of the founding fathers of American Modernism. He trained as an architect, but became a master of several design disciplines through his career, long before interdisciplinary was a recognised term. Under Nelson's Directorship of Design for Herman Miller, the brand's product range grew to include some of the most iconic home furnishings of the 20th century.
